Athens KEP

Architects often rush to explain their choices and the way a space should be perceived. Yet architecture is not merely an expression of rationality or aesthetics; it is a tool for engaging with reality, shaped by emotions, experiences, and processes of perception. An architectural work should allow multiple readings, changing with time, context, and the state of influence we are in. Since architecture designs lives, it inevitably reflects the complex realities through which we experience and interpret the world.

Milos Cove

Humbled by the majesty of its surroundings, the architecture seems to fold inward, as if shielding itself from the natural elements. Its design evokes the organic complexity of a Cycladic village: narrow alleys, external staircases, stone retaining walls. Openings of varying sizes offer shifting vistas. Pergolas provide shade; greenery softens the space, offering coolness and beauty. These distinctly Greek architectural features are interlaced into a balanced composition that responds to the bright, unyielding sun of the Aegean.

Earth Light

This building was designed based on the relationship of man with the landscape and particularly the earth. The entrance from the street is created by two parallel walls which contain the staircase and “slice” the earth in order to guide you to the ground level of the house. This level accommodates the most introvert-private spaces of the house, the bedrooms, and it has been designed to either open up towards the landscape or be completely isolated from it, according to the mood of its inhabitants. In contrast, the level of the living-dining-kitchen area, the more extrovert-public spaces of the house is surrounded by glass, allowing the landscape to become part of the living space.

In[n]Athens

in[n]Athens is housed in a preserved building in the center of Athens, located at the heart of a city block. This position gives it a distinctive character, as it is enclosed by surrounding buildings that limit outward views, while simultaneously creating a calm sense of inwardness. Access to the three-story listed building is through a passage arcade lined with shops, which acts as a natural filter for the visitor, guiding them from the noise of the city into a more introspective interior space.

Peeling Off Time

Τhe Spiteri residence-atelier is a two-building edifice, at the corner of Kykladon and Kefallinias street. Toni Spiteri was one of first art critics in Greece and his wife Ioanna, an important sculptor. The couple initially lived in the corner building, erected at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1955, they commissioned Aristomeni Proveleggio to design and construct the adjacent small studio. In contrast, the level of the living-dining-kitchen area, the more extrovert-public spaces of the house is surrounded by glass, allowing the landscape to become part of the living space. A staircase leads to the planted terrace and from there a bridge proceeds directly into the landscape where the half-suspended swimming pool “floats” over the sloping plot.

FamilYar

The residence comprises of two main volumes that are united in the centre by a glass atrium-dining room, which, during summertime can be extended to the outside. The one-storey volume houses in a row the bedrooms and the kitchen with direct access to the surrounding space of the land. The second volume has the high ceiling living room on the ground floor and an autonomous guest room-observatory on the first floor with a view of the sea. The whole house is tinted with colour plaster which uses as its basis the colour of the surrounding earth. The final positioning of almost each opening of the residence was decided on site, according to specific viewpoints either towards the orange trees or the sea.

Still Journey

The building was handled by the architect as a container within which one can alter the view by will or mood. The view from the window is not standard. Depending on where you are in the house you can move the panels in order to focus on the sea and the horizon. A metal box has been attached on this white container with the moving panels, a box that is the master bedroom’s fireplace but also a window towards the view.

The aim was to create a three dimensional grid of concrete to be infused with various materials to reflect diverse uses. The materials used in the construction of the building (concrete, glass, aluminum, stainless steel, wood, copper, marble,) have received minimum treatment or have remained untreated in order to give its users the ability to touch and feel their difference but also to enable them to mature in the course of time.

+Biosis

This apartment is on the 3rd floor of an eight storey residential building in Pagkrati, located in one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in the center of Athens. The building steps back from the street elevation, creating a void in the row of the neighboring street facades, but at the same time, offering to the building’s inhabitants more space in front of them. Although the building retreats, the aim is not to disrupt the existing built environment, therefore it gestures with a “hand”-balcony towards the street and the buildings around it, inviting the inhabitants to participate in a symbolic dialogue.

Stand into the void

This is a four storey multi-residence building located in the south suburb of Voula. Simplicity and clear geometry are combined with transparency in order to allow the building to develop a close relationship with its surroundings and mainly the amazing sea view. This communication with the sea was the basis upon which the architects based their fundamental architectural principles.

Il Buco

Designed by Dionisis Sotovikis, Kirki Mariolopoulou, together with Anastasis Sotovikis and Kwnstantina Batziou of Sotovikis+B, Il buco_deli and Il buco_restaurant reinterpret Psirri’s raw, vibrant character through a contemporary architectural lens. The 15 sq.m street-level deli is conceived as a black “box” that opens onto the city, embracing the idea of the “hole” (il buco) as both concept and name, while its plywood surfaces absorb the life of the street. This intimate urban gesture extends across the road to the restaurant above, where a black, plywood-lined cocktail bar echoes the deli, contrasting with bright white dining rooms furnished with a mix of antique and modern elements. Together, the spaces create a dialogue between old and new, street and interior, leaving visitors with a distinctly warm, nostalgic sense of place.

Heart(h)

This residential building in the northern suburb of Agia Paraskevi is constructed of reinforced concrete, left entirely untreated both inside and out. The large transparent surfaces emphasize the building’s relationship with the surrounding environment. The block of flats is conceived as a multi-residential structure in which each occupant, by lighting a fire, not only alters the building’s façade but simultaneously sends a symbolic message to society.

No-one

The renovation of an apartment in a building constructed in 1938 is an opportunity for architectural experimentation. The structural elements of the apartment that cannot be changed, lightwells, columns, beams and windows, are coated with refined copper, a material constantly changing highlighting the enduring value of the building. The external wall has been thickened to incorporate libraries, closets and storage areas.

Concurrent Experience

This is an apartment that does not attempt to suggest new aesthetic approach by being contemporary or just functional but emphasizes on these psychological limitations in order to extenuate the necessity for redefining facts.
